2.3 Safety equipment
The following safety equipment (fall protection devices) is approved for use:
• Fall arrester system
• Safety cage
Manipulation of the safety equipment is prohibited. If defects are ascertained,
the fixed ladder system must not be used.
Observe the relevant standards, depending on the designated use of the fixed
ladder system.
2.3.1 Fixed ladders for construction works (DIN 18799-1 and DIN 18799-3)
A fall protection device in the form of a safety cage or fall arrester system complying
with EN 353-1 is mandatory if the potential fall height is ≥3 metres.
If the fixed ladder is of multi-section design, the maximum permissible length of each
ladder section is 10 metres.
In addition, the top exit must be equipped with an exit step, a double safety barrier and
a safety rail. The safety rails must extend 1.5 metres to each side and 2 metres into
the exit platform.
2.3.2 Emergency ladder systems (DIN 14094-1)
A fall protection device is mandatory if the potential fall height is 3 metres or more.
Fall arrester systems complying with EN 353-1 are not allowed to be used. Only a safety
cage is allowed to be used for fall protection.
If the fixed ladder has multiple sections, each section must not be longer than 6 metres.
The top exit must be designed with an angled stile.
2.3.3 Permanent means of access to machinery; fixed ladders (EN ISO 14122 Part 4)
A fall protection device in the form of a safety cage or fall arrester system complying
with EN 353-1 is mandatory if the potential fall height is ≥3 metres.
If the fixed ladder system has multiple sections, each section must not be longer than
6 metres.
2.4 Operating instructions and training
The operator is required
• to compile operating instructions for the use of the fixed ladder system. These
instructions must contain all necessary information on the safe use of the equipment.
• at least once a year to instruct personnel using the equipment, on the basis of
the operating instructions.
• to inform personnel using the equipment that the emergency-ladder systems may
only be used in the event of fire and for maintenance.
