ZERO G GYROSCOPIC
ESCAPEMENT
THE DARING COMPLICATION
Zenith has produced one of the greatest
watchmaking creations of recent years –
a complication that required 5 years of technical
development.
This timepiece is the first for which the rate
is completely independent of the wearer's
movements. Its secret? A regulating organ that
remains constantly in the horizontal position. Such
is the technical complexity of this construction that,
until now, it has never been successful. Imagine, if
you will, that the mechanism that measures the time
must remain flat while the wearer is driving a car or
skippering a catamaran: this will give you an idea of
the extreme complexity of this project. Introducing
a highly sophisticated mechanism that liberates the
watch from the effects of the Earth's gravitational
field. Whether caused by sailing in rough seas or
simply normal movement of the wrists, the problem
for the watchmakers was one and the same: the
constant motion is detrimental to the accuracy of
these instruments. To improve maritime navigation,
an Italian inventor called Cardano developed a
marine compass mounted on universal joints.
