MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
MOTOR MAINTENANCE
The motor doesn’t require much maintenance, but dust can collect inside the motor and can cause premature
brush wear. If you ride in dusty conditions it is important to blow the dust out of the motor with compressed air.
SUSPENSION
The 2009 Zero S and DS are equipped with a custom designed Fast Ace suspension system. The front fork
features full rebound control, by way of a brass screw located on top of each fork leg. There is also an identical
adjuster for compression damping located on the bottom of each leg under a rubber cover.
The small 3mm Allen screw located just in front of the rebound adjuster is a “burp” port. This allows built up
air pressure to be released from the fork leg when the bike is tied down for transport, preventing oil leaks.
Fast Ace forks require little maintenance. The fork oil should be changed every 2 years or 10,000 miles.
Wiper seals should be inspected frequently; failed seals can lead to a loss of fork oil.
The rear suspension on the Zero S features preload and rebound damping adjustments. Preload is altered
by loosening the lock ring on the spring and turning the adjuster to either compress or decompress the spring.
Rebound damping is adjusted using the red knob located at the base of the shock.
The rear shock should be serviced every 2 years and carefully inspected for oil leaks or external damage.
WHEELS AND TIRES
The rear wheel is mounted on a solid axle using pinch bolts and axle end-caps. To install the rear wheel line up
the hole through the center of the hub with the holes in the dropouts and slide the axle in. Snug the axle bolts
using a 6mm allen wrench then tighten the dropout pinch bolt with a 6mm wrench (see torque table, page 22).
To install or remove the rear wheel, the chain guide must first be pivoted forward so that the rear sprocket does
not hit the chain guide. To pivot the chain guide, loosen the two chain guide mounting bolts. The rear mounting
bolt fits into a slot in the chain guide so the chain guide can pivot forward without removing the bolts.
TO REMOVE THE FRONT TIRE
•
Loosen two 5mm axle pinch bolts.
•
Remove the 6mm axle end cap.
•
Loosen the other two axle pinch bolts and slide the axle out of the fork.
•
Remove the front wheel.
(Re-installation is the reverse of above)
