CHAIN LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE
The Zero S/DS motorcycle uses a standard 420 pitch chain and requires regular lubrication and inspection like
any other chain. Also like on any other motorcycle, there must be slack in the chain. The chain tension is
measured when the motorcycle is on a center stand and the swing arm is in the full down position. Then the chain
tension can be adjusted to provide approximately 1
1
/
4
inch (32mm) of total vertical free-play when measured
at the middle. The total vertical free-play is the difference between when the chain is lifted up in the middle and
when it is pushed down in the middle.
Adjusting the chain tension is very easy. To adjust the chain tension, first support the motorcycle so that the rear
wheel is off the ground. Then loosen all four of the motor mounting bolts. Please note that the motor mount bolts
are the only English sized bolts on the motorcycle. All of the other hardware on the motorcycle is metric. The
black anodized chain tensioner is metric. Use the chain tensioner’s 13mm hex bolt to adjust the chain tension.
Then re-tighten the motor mounting bolts. Do not over tighten the motor mounting bolts since the motor adapter
plate is aluminum.
A worn chain will damage the sprockets so it is advisable to replace the chain before it is too worn. A replacement
chain can be ordered from www.zeromotorcycles.com
CLEANING
1. Do not use steam or high-pressure washers. The high steam or water pressure could damage seals or
electrical components, causing water seepage and deterioration.
2. Avoid using strong acidic wheel cleaners, especially on spoked wheels. If such products are used on
hard-to-remove dirt, do not leave the cleaner on the affected area any longer than instructed. Also thoroughly
rinse the area off with water, immediately dry it, and then apply a corrosion protection spray.
3. Improper cleaning can damage cowlings, panels and other plastic parts. Use only a soft, clean cloth or
sponge with mild detergent and water to clean plastic.
4. Do not use any harsh chemical products on plastic parts. Be sure to avoid using cloths or sponges which
have been in contact with strong abrasive cleaning products, solvent or thinner, fuel (gasoline), rust removers
or inhibitors, brake fluid, antifreeze or electrolyte.
5. After gently washing the motorcycle be sure to allow all of the electrical components to dry prior to
operation.
