2A Installing the ZoomAir PC Card under Windows 95 and 98

21

Green indicates the network connection. If it is flashing rapidly,

the adapter is scanning for a beacon signal from a member of the

network. If it is flashing slowly, either the adapter is the one that

started the beacon on an ad-hoc network, or the adapter has joined

an ad-hoc network. If it is solid green, it has joined an Access Point

in an infrastructure network.
Yellow indicates that data is being sent or received. The flash rate

depends on the size of each data packet and the frequency with

which they arrive. This rate may be high enough that the indicator

seems to be on constantly at times.

Next Steps

Your installation is now complete. If you are installing a wireless

ad-hoc network, all of your network clients should be connected to

each other.

The next step, for both ad-hoc and infrastructure networks, is for

each client to determine whether it will share its printer, if any, and

its files. This is covered in Chapter 3.
You may also want to create a higher level of security for your

wireless network. This is achieved by changing the network identi-

fication (Service Set Identifier, or SSID) for all clients and by im-

plementing Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). These topics are

covered in Chapter 4. If you have a simple two- or three-client ad-

hoc network in a private home or a small office, you probably al-

ready have all the security you need.
