Classifier
21.1 Classifier Overview
This chapt er int r oduces and show s you how t o configur e t he packet classifier on t he Swit ch. I t also
discusses Qualit y of Ser vice ( QoS) and classifier concept s as em ployed by t he Swit ch.
21.1.1 What You Can Do

21.1.2 What You Need to Know
Qualit y of Ser vice ( QoS) r efer s t o bot h a net w or k's abilit y t o deliver dat a w it h m inim um delay, and
t he net w or king m et hods used t o cont r ol t he use of bandw idt h. Wit hout QoS, all t raffic dat a is
equally likely t o be dr opped w hen t he net w or k is congest ed. This can cause a r educt ion in net w or k
per for m ance and m ake t he net w or k inadequat e for t im e- crit ical applicat ion such as video- on-
dem and.
A classifier gr oups t raffic int o dat a flow s accor ding t o specific cr it er ia such as t he sour ce addr ess,
dest inat ion addr ess, sour ce por t num ber, dest inat ion por t num ber or incom ing por t num ber. For
exam ple, you can configur e a classifier t o select t raffic fr om t he sam e pr ot ocol por t ( such as Telnet )
t o for m a flow.
Configur e QoS on t he Sw it ch t o gr oup and pr ior it ize applicat ion t raffic and fine- t une net w or k
