This field displays w het her t he neighbor I Pv6 int er face is r eachable. I n I Pv 6, “ r eachable”
m eans an I Pv 6 packet can be cor r ect ly for war ded t o a neighbor node ( host or r out er ) and t he
neighbor can successfully r eceive and handle t he packet . The available opt ions in t his field
ar e:
•
r eachable ( R) : The int er face of t he neighboring dev ice is r eachable. ( The Sw it ch has
r eceived a r esponse t o t he init ial r equest .)
•
st ale ( S) : The last r eachable t im e has ex pir ed and t he Sw it ch is wait ing for a r esponse t o
anot her init ial r equest . The field display s t his also w hen t he Sw it ch receives an
unr equest ed r esponse fr om t he neighbor ’s int er face.
•
delay ( D) : The neighboring int er face is no longer k now n t o be r eachable, and t raffic has
been sent t o t he neighbor r ecent ly. The Sw it ch delay s sending r equest packet s for a shor t
t o give upper- layer pr ot ocols a chance t o det er m ine r eachabilit y.
•
pr obe ( P) : The Sw it ch is sending r equest packet s and w ait ing for t he neighbor ’s r esponse.
•
invalid ( I V) : The neighbor addr ess is w it h an invalid I Pv 6 addr ess.
•
unknow n ( ?) : The st at us of t he neighbor ing int er face can not be det er m ined for som e
r eason.
•
incom plet e ( I ) : Addr ess r esolut ion is in progr ess and t he link- layer addr ess of t he neighbor
has not yet been det er m ined. The int erface of t he neighbor ing dev ice did not give a
com plet e r esponse.

This field display s t he t y pe of an addr ess m apping t o a neighbor int er face. The available
opt ions in t his field ar e:

ot her ( O) : none of t he follow ing t y pe.
•
local ( L) : A Sw it ch int er face is using t he addr ess.
•
dy nam ic ( D) : The I P address t o MAC address can be successfully r esolved using I Pv6
Neighbor Discover y pr ot ocol. I s it sim ilar as I Pv 4 ARP ( Addr ess Resolut ion pr ot ocol) .
•
st at ic ( S) : The int er face address is st at ically configur ed.
