24.1 Multicast Overview

I GMP ( I nt ernet Gr oup Managem ent Pr ot ocol) is a net w or k- layer pr ot ocol used t o est ablish
m em ber ship in a m ult icast gr oup - it is not used t o car r y user dat a. Refer t o RFC 1112, RFC 2236
and RFC 3376 for infor m at ion on I GMP ver sions 1, 2 and 3 r espect ively.

IP Multicast Addresses
I n I Pv4, a m ult icast address allow s a device t o send packet s t o a specific gr oup of host s ( m ult icast
gr oup) in a differ ent subnet w or k. A m ult icast I P addr ess r epr esent s a t raffic r eceiving gr oup, not
individual r eceiving devices. I P addr esses in t he Class D range ( 224.0.0.0 t o 239.255.255.255) are
used for I P m ult icast ing. Cer t ain I P m ult icast num ber s ar e r eser ved by I ANA for special pur poses
( see t he I ANA w ebsit e for m or e infor m at ion) .
