8.4 Introduction to VLANs
A VLAN ( Vir t ual Local Ar ea Net w or k) allow s a physical net w or k t o be par t it ioned int o m ult iple logical
net w or ks. Devices on a logical net w or k belong t o one gr oup. A dev ice can belong t o m or e t han one
gr oup. Wit h VLAN, a device cannot dir ect ly t alk t o or hear fr om devices t hat ar e not in t he sam e
gr oup( s) ; t he t raffic m ust fir st go t hr ough a r out er.
I n MTU ( Mult i-Tenant Unit ) applicat ions, VLAN is vit al in pr oviding isolat ion and secur it y am ong t he
subscr iber s. When pr oper ly configur ed, VLAN pr event s one subscr iber fr om accessing t he net w or k
r esour ces of anot her on t he sam e LAN, t hus a user w ill not see t he pr int er s and har d disks of
anot her user in t he sam e building.
VLAN also incr eases net w or k per for m ance by lim it ing br oadcast s t o a sm aller and m or e
m anageable logical br oadcast dom ain. I n t radit ional sw it ched envir onm ent s, all br oadcast packet s
go t o each and ever y individual por t . Wit h VLAN, all br oadcast s ar e confined t o a specific br oadcast
dom ain.
Not e: VLAN is unidir ect ional; it only gover ns out going t raffic.

Select t he t im e differ ence bet w een UTC ( Univer sal Tim e Coor dinat ed, for m er ly k now n as
GMT, Greenw ich Mean Tim e) and your t im e zone fr om t he dr op- dow n list box .
Day light Sav ing
Tim e
Day light sav ing is a per iod fr om lat e spr ing t o ear ly fall w hen m any count r ies set t heir
clock s ahead of nor m al local t im e by one hour t o give m or e dayt im e light in t he evening.
Select t his opt ion if you use Day light Sav ing Tim e.

Mar ch. Each t im e zone in t he Unit ed St at es st ar t s using Day light Sav ing Tim e at 2 A.M.
local t im e. So in t he Unit ed St at es you w ould select Se con d, Su n da y, M a r ch and 2 :0 0 .
Day light Sav ing Tim e st ar t s in t he Eur opean Union on t he last Sunday of Mar ch. All of t he
t im e zones in t he Eur opean Union st ar t using Daylight Saving Tim e at t he sam e m om ent
( 1 A.M. GMT or UTC) . So in t he Eur opean Union you w ould select La st , Su n da y, M a r ch
and t he last field depends on your t im e zone. I n Ger m any for inst ance, you w ould select
2 :0 0 because Germ any 's t im e zone is one hour ahead of GMT or UTC ( GMT+ 1) .
