IEEE 802.1Q Tagged VLANs
A t agged VLAN uses an explicit t ag ( VLAN I D) in t he MAC header t o ident ify t he VLAN m em ber ship
of a fram e acr oss br idges - t hey ar e not confined t o t he sw it ch on w hich t hey w er e cr eat ed. The
VLANs can be cr eat ed st at ically by hand or dynam ically t hr ough GVRP. The VLAN I D associat es a
fram e w it h a specific VLAN and pr ovides t he infor m at ion t hat sw it ches need t o pr ocess t he fram e
acr oss t he net w or k. A t agged fram e is four byt es longer t han an unt agged fram e and cont ains t w o
byt es of TPI D ( Tag Pr ot ocol I dent ifier, r esiding w it hin t he t ype/ lengt h field of t he Et her net fram e)
