Rain Barrel Overflow Drain Hose kit - User Guide
Model Number F-RN090
Use this kit to add an overflow hose to any rain barrel to help reduce flooding. This kit includes a high capacity
drain hose to drain excess water away from a rain barrel.
Please read these instructions thoroughly before starting the installation to avoid damage to property or injury.
Tip: Consider linking 2 or more barrels in series to catch additional rainwater using an EarthMinded Linking Kit.
The overflow hose can be fitted to the last barrel in the series if all barrels are on the same level
.
Contents of this kit:

Instructions
Tool needed for installation:
•
Marker
•
Drill
•
Safety gloves
•
Safety glassed
Not for use on metal drums!
Select a location
for the hose seal near the top rim of the barrel keeping in mind that the overflow hose will need
to extend down the side of the barrel to dispense water into a storm drain or away from the buildings foundation.
Suggestions for linking 2 or more rain barrels from top rim to top rim:
•
Preferred: fit the overflow hose on the last barrel in the series.
•
If the drain hose is not fitted to the last rain barrel in the series; the overflow hose must be higher than
the level of the linking hose to allow water to fill linked barrels
Locating the seal for bottom linked barrels:
•
The overflow hose should be added to the lower of the 2 barrels, the level of the overflow hose inlet will
dictate the “full” level for both barrels.
Mark
the center for drilling the hose seal hole at least 2” (50mm) below the top rim of the barrel on a smooth
surface free of features that may impede drilling or fitting the seal.
The bottom of the seal will determine the new “FULL” water level in the rain barrel.
Check before drilling:
center the seal over the mark to make sure that the flange will rest on the barrel without
interference, relocate the mark if needed.
Note: Risk of Electrocution! If the barrel is already in use, make sure to drain the water at least 6” (150mm) below
the outlet to be drilled and do not let drill or cord come in contact with water.
Drill
a 1.5” hole using the hole saw included. Hold the drill firmly with both hands. Remove the plastic cutout from
the saw cup after drilling.
Insert
the hose seal into the hole in the barrel and press until the flange sits flat against the surface of the barrel.
Tip: The seal can be crimped into a “U” to make insertion easier.
Press the cuff end of the hose into the seal being careful not to crimp the cuff as this could cause a leak
Tip: Use soapy water or hand lotion on the hose cuff to reduce friction between the seal and hose
.
Extend the hose to dispense water to a storm drain, or to a graded surface leading away from the homes
foundation.
Tip: drain overflow water into a 5-gallon bucket or watering can for quick watering choirs.
Tip: Consider linking 2 or more barrels in series to catch additional rainwater using an EarthMinded Linking Kit.
The overflow hose can be fitted to the last barrel in the series if all barrels are on the same level
.
Removal:
We do not recommend removing the hose from the seal. Gently collapse the accordion hose to shorten the length
for storage. If the hose must be removed, hold the hose near the seal and gently wiggle the hose while pulling out.
Do not pull on the accordion section as it could damage the hose.
Trouble shooting
The barrel continues to overflow in a heavy rain
•
Make sure that the hose is not blocked or obstructed
•
Check that no point on the hose is higher than the outlet on the barrel.
•
If the volume of water entering the barrel is greater than the capacity of the hose, an additional over flow
hose may be needed.
