Operation   of   the   FEI   Tecnai   F30   Polara

Initial   Checks   
   

1.

Ensure   the   following   software   applications   are   all   running   and   open   in   

this   order:

Tecnai   User   Interface   

-­‐

Filter   control   

-­‐

Digital   Micrograph   

-­‐

TEM   Imaging   and   Analysis   (TIA)   

If   you   need   to   restart   the   software   close   all   programs   and   restart   in   the   
above   order.   Sometimes   logging   out   and   back   in   again   can   sort   out   bugs.   
The   username   is   supervisor   and   the   password   is   f30d316   

2.

Check   the   vacuum.   The   Gun   should   be   at   Log   1   and   the   Column   at   Log   6.   
The   Camera   should   be   below   Log   35.

Make   sure   the   High   Tension   is   ON   (High   Tension   button   Yellow)   and   the   

FEG   is   ON   (Operate   button   is   Yellow).

Check   the   LN2   levels   in   the   inner   and   outer   dewars.   The   inner   dewar      (He   

dewar)   should   be   between   13-­‐14   (left   display)   and   the   outer   dewar   
should   be   above   70%.   The   inner   dewar   needs   topping   up   every   2-­‐3   days.   
The   outer   dewar   will   empty   at   a   rate   of   ~5%/hour   and   should   not   go   

below   20%.   

5.

Use   the   metal   funnel   to   top   up   the   Insertion   Rod   dewar.   This   dewar   can   

last   up   to   10   hours.   If   the   Insertion   Rod   warms   up   the   vacuum   
deteriorates   and   the   HT   may   switch   off.   When   collecting   with   EPU   a   LN2   
top-­‐up   at   11pm   will   ensure   it   stays   cold   until   9am   the   next   day.   

6.

Check   the   temperatures   of   the   different   channels   on   the   display:   
1.   Helium   cryo   shield   
2.   Nitrogen   cryo   shield   

3.   Helium   cold   finger   
4.   Nitrogen   cold   finger   

5.   Guide   tube   
6.   Insertion   rod   
7.   Selection   rod   

7.

If   the   specimen   Selection   Rod   is   still   attached   to   the   microscope,   move   it   
to   the   transfer   station   

-­‐   Make   sure   column   valves   are   closed.   
-­‐   Vent   airlock   
-­‐   Under   Setup   -­‐>   Helium   -­‐>   Vent   airlock   

-­‐   Wait   for   message   to   close   valve   B   
-­‐   Close   valve   B   (Pull   out   a   bit,   then   push   all   the   way   in   to   lock)   
-­‐   Wait   for   message   to   close   valve   A   

-­‐   Close   valve   A   (Pull   out   a   bit,   then   push   all   the   way   in   to   lock)   
-­‐   Detach   the   temperature   lead   via   the   USB   connection   

-­‐   With   one   hand   on   the   plastic   manipulator   at   the   base,   release   
clamps,   rotate   and   lift   off   hinges,   move   over   to   the   transfer   station   
-­‐   Place   on   hinges,   rotate   flush,   fasten   clamps
