Calibration of Levels
Levels can be calibrated even on a non-level surface:
After purchase of a new level or the installation of a
new vial, place level on a flat surface. Adjust jam nuts
until you get bubble reading on the vial. Rotate level
180 degrees and adjust 1/2 of difference out of bubble
reading. Rotate level 180 degrees again, now bubble
should read exactly the same in both positions. You
may need to repeat this process 2-3 times to fine tune
level.
If you can adjust surface that you just calibrated level
on, adjust it so the bubble reads center of the vial, then
rotate level 180° to prove level repeats (Bubble staying
in the center).
How to adjust the VGL-100 Valve Guide Level
This level is un-calibrated when you receive it. Your
first step is to level machine bed as close as possible (by
eye). Set cylinder head in cradle with chamber side up.
Level by eye as close as possible. Set new level on top
of valve guide pilot. With level vial facing front to back
(position the end with 2 jam nuts facing you). Adjust
level of head or level vial until you can get some sort of
bubble reading. Rotate level 180°, just opposite of
where you started. Read where bubble is exactly, now
rotate level back to its original position. Noting the two
readings, adjust 1/2 of the difference of the two readings
out of the level itself by loosening and snugging the two
nuts on one end.
Even though the level may not read exactly in center it
is calibrated correctly when the readings 180° apart are
the same.
Double check this by rotating 90° from where you are
at. (Perpendicular to the previous placements). Read the
bubble, then rotate 180° from this point, if level is cali-
brated, the bubble will repeat its previous reading in the
new position. (Readings 180° apart will be the same if
the level is calibrated.)
Now to center bubble in level, re-adjust cylinder head
and pilot so bubble reads center. Then rotate level
through full circle (360°). The bubble should remain at
center, if not, repeat calibration process. (Remember
machine must be level to get your Level to read dead
center.)
Even if you are 1/8 of a line space off after calibration
this will be close enough to install guides properly.
