Accompanying U.S. Robotics Sportster 56K bps 
modem has been factory configured for use with 
APOGEE Field Panel Dial-Up Application.

Installation Instructions 

1. 

For international installation, locally purchase U.S. Robotics 
Sportster 56K bps modem configured for the country where 
used and program settings per this instruction. 

Prerequisites 

 

Analog telephone line connected through a NEC 
800.30 type telephone primary protector.  

 

UL497A telephone transient suppressor 
installed. For field panel a 538-600 telephone 
transient suppressor is installed. Suppressor 
sold separately or included in modem kits, refer 
to Installation Instruction 538-674. 

 

UL1449 listed power line protector. Not required 
if plugged into a field panel service box outlet or 
outlet assembly.

WARNING: 

 

Connect modem to telephone line through 
a UL497A listed Telephone Transient 
Surge Suppressor and and NEC 800.30 
telephone primary protector. 

Required for modem installation in a field 
panel used per 

Smoke Control Application 

and Engineering Manual

 (125-1806).  

WARNING: 

 

Connect modem to power through a 
UL1449 listed power protector or field 
panel service box outlet. 

CAUTION: 

 

Modem must be connected to an analog 
telephone line. Using a non-analog line 
(e.g., PBX, digital, multi-line) will damage 
modem. A transient surge protector is 
required. 

CAUTION: 

 

This modem has been factory set to 
automatically start in the dial-up mode.

External Switch Settings  

DIP switches, located on the back of the modem, 
have been configured to start-up in the APOGEE 
Dial-Up Application for field panels as shown in the 
following illustration:

APOGEE Insight Auto-Dial Application will override 
DIP switch settings as needed.
