XL-DVDRAM
External FireWire DVD-RAM Drive
The XL-DVDRAM is an external FireWire (-1394a) optical drive for use with Sound Devices 7-Series Digital Record-
ers. Based on the Panasonic UJ-85 Multi-drive mechanism (5X DVD-RAM) the XL-DVDRAM drive becomes an
available storage volume for either direct recording or file copying to a 7-Series recorder. The XL-DVDRAM is bus-
powered directly from the FireWire port of the 7-Series recorder. No additional power source is required.
In addition to its application when connected to a 7-Series recorder, the XL-DVDRAM can be used as an external
FireWire or USB optical drive with Mac OS and Windows computers.
Connecting to a 7-Series Recorder
The XL-DVDRAM is ready for use directly out of the box. Follow the steps below for operation.
Sound Devices
strongly recommends using the XL-1394 when directly recording to the XL-DVDRAM with the 702, 702T, 722, and
744T recorders. The power conditioning circuitry of the XL-1394 is integrated into the 788T’s design.
1. Verify that the 702, 702T, 722, or 744T is running 2.01 firmware or greater and that the hardware is “2.0-ready”. This does
not apply to the 788T. The 788T has always been compatible with the XL-DVDRAM.
2. Verify that the power is off on the 7-Series recorder.
3. Connect the XL-DVDRAM directly to the 7-Series recorder (for file copying) or connect via the XL-1394 FireWire Power
Filter (for direct-to-disk recording with the 702, 702T, 722, and 744T recorders). Always connect the 788T directly to the
XL-DVDRAM. The power conditioning circuitry of the XL-1394 is integrated into the 788T’s design.
4. Power on the recorder.
5. Insert a DVD-RAM disk into the drive. Sound Devices recommends 5X DVD-RAM media when recording four or more
tracks at 24-bit. Direct recording of files with sampling rates above 48.048 Hz is not recommended.
6. If the inserted disk is not formatted, or not formatted as a FAT32 volume, the 7-Series will prompt to format the disk.
7. Select the EXT drive from the 7-Series Setup Menu as a destination for recorded or copied files.
Connecting XL-DVDRAM to a Windows or Mac OS Computer
The XL-DVDRAM is usable as an external DVD drive with Windows and Mac OS computers meeting the minimum
system requirements (
see Specifications
).
1. Connect the XL-DVDRAM to the computer using the included USB or FireWire cable.
2. Power the drive using the included power supply when using USB connections.
3. If using Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Mac OS X the drive will mount onto the desktop with no drivers required.
4. The drive is now ready for operation.
