Use the
password encryption
command to enable encryption of the password
defined by both:
• the username command
- and -
• the enable command
before they are stored in the configuration file. Using the no command will
disable the encryption.

Usage Guideline
The user account configuration information will be stored in the configuration file,
and can be applied to the system later.
If the password encryption is enabled, the password will be in encrypted form.
When password encryption is disabled, and the user specifies the password in
plain text form, the password will be in plain text form. However, if the user
specifies the password in encrypted form, or if the password has been converted
to encrypted form by the last enable password encryption command, the
password will stay in the encrypted form. Once in the encrypted form it cannot
revert to plaintext.
Example
The below example shows how to enable password encryption.
Verify the settings by entering the
show system protocol-state
command.
Switch(config)# password encrypt
